Genealogy Lists….Not What Theyre Cracked Up To Be
At one time using genealogy lists as part of marketing your MLM business was quite the rage. Like many “fads” this infatuation soon came back down to earth. Although there are still some who advocate their use (e.g. Tracy Biller) the facts far outweigh what hype continues to circulate about their potential.
MLM genealogy leads are basically the names of people from an MLM company thats no longer in business.
They can be acquired through contacts within the MLM company that dissolved, or a list can be purchased from a third party company.
But because of how theyre harvested, and because they didnt actually request to hear from anyone, I would suggest staying far away from them…especially with the fines one can get these days for unsolicited phone calls, etc.
Besides the financial/legal risk…..its just plain unethical to me. Remember…none of these people actually asked for any information.
Everytime Ive heard of people selling geneology leads, my first thought is they are just lists of people that were in a company at one time, and the company went under, or else really burned the people on the list. Not exactly great candidates for building a solid long lasting organization with you.
Genealogy lists are sold over and over again, and many people get called over and over again. Some people have said,’I dont know how I got on that list, but I get called all the time’.
Also, its not something that is duplictateable, because the new person could never put up with the rejection theyll get over and over again. Also many of the phone numbers are no longer valid.
Having said that, people have been recruited off these type of lists, that immediately went out and brought several other Networkers with them, into the business, but it is very hard work, and takes a lot of calls and much persistance.
It is possibly one way to build your business, but nothing takes the place of the warm market, or people you personally run into on a daily basis.
The biggest mistake made is trying to bring everyone into your business, and not qualifying them first. I think this says it best when recruiting.
You are starting your own business, ‘Who do you want on your board of Directors’.The type of people you have on your board of Directors, will determine the success of your business.
Join your local chamber of commerce, network in niche communities (online and offline), ask for referrals from satistifed customers, work in your warm market and referrals, get into blogging, publish a newsletter, write and submit articles, or promote a lead capture website using SEO techniques ….. and you wont run out of truely interested people to talk to. And thats a fact.
If you really want to expand your marketing efforts and purchase leads …. make sure you buy quality genuinely interested leads from a reputable source. For example…… Peak Impact. Or learn how to generate your own leads. Then youll have a consistent inexpensive source that will last as long as you do. Even better …. do both. No one says you cant.
